Update Freak has published many articles about Marvel movies and most of them are about Avengers: Endgame. A year goes by, the movie is still making headlines. The directors, actors, production team, screenwriters and producers always reveal something confounding to leave the fans in perplexity.
Recently for the one year anniversary, Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely, Anthony Russo, and Joe Russo came along for a watch party hosted by ComicBook.com to dissect every part of the movie. Avengers: Endgame is 3 hours long, in view of that, a large number of facts have been unveiled. This article unearths things that were broken down in the watch party and also those that have made headlines over time.
35. Hugo Weaving didn’t play Red Skull in Endgame
Red Skull was introduced to the MCU in Captain America: The First Avenger, the character was played by Hugo Weaving. The actor played Red Skull only for that single movie and never returned for the role. Even the Russo Brother’s could bring him back leaving no choice but to replace the actor. Ross Marquand played Red Skull in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
34. Hawkeye was originally supposed to sacrifice for the Soul Stone
Vormir is a fu*ked up place. It doesn’t even have the actual Red Skull. Knowing one has to die in order to own the Soul Stone, Natasha and Clint brawl, but it’s Natasha who jumps off the cliff. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, writers of Endgame came up with a draft in which Clint sacrifices his life instead of Romanoff. Marvel’s visual effects producer, Jen Underdahl insisted on changing the story and made Black Widow give her life. McFeely said the following:
She[Underdahl] read an outline or draft where Hawkeye goes over. And she goes, ‘Don’t you take this away from her.’
33. “I Love You 3000” was Robert Downey Jr.’s Idea
Endgame left many catchy lines and unforgettable dialogues that fans still remember and mention on social media. #LoveYou3000 was trending for months after the movie premiered. The line was first said by Morgan Stark(Lexi Rabe), then Tony uses it again. 3000 meant the whole runtime of all MCU movies until then. However, Robert Downey Jr. came up with the idea by remembering what one of his children said to him. The original line was “I love you tons” which then got changed to “I love you 3000”.
32. Steve and Peggy dance 10 minutes after Captain America returns all Infinity Stones
The last shot of Endgame features a long-lasting dream which sounded impossible not long ago. If you have noticed, the door to Peggy’s house is left open while she’s dancing with Steve. I guess this takes place after Cap from that specific multiverse crashed the plane. Steve McFeely said they danced not long after Steve from our multiverse entered the house:
I imagine that about 10 minutes ago, [Cap] knocked on the door, she dropped whatever she was holding.
31. Ticket for Avengers: Endgame were sold for $2500 on eBay
Is this legal in America? Advance booking for Endgame was 5 times more selling than that was for Infinity War. One lucky dude bought the tickets for the movie in “Dolby Digitial at Quail Springs Mall Oklahoma City” and sold two tickets on eBay for $4999. Shows around the whole were sold out for the first weekend leading to the sale of black tickets.
30. Robert Downey Jr. exhorted on Tony remaining silent before his death
Dialogues were written for Tony and others saying goodbye and stuff at the moments of his death. But Tony remained silent and stuck to it. I must say the silence made it more emotional and heartbreaking. When you look the other way around, it’s plausible, using Infinity Gauntlet by a normal human being can be very painful.
29. After wearing the Gauntlet, Banner experienced more pain when compared to Tony
This dwelled my brain for quite some time. But there’s an answer and it’s simple. Bruce Banner was afflicted badly the second he wore the Gauntlet, however, Tony was able to speak to Thanos and give away his signature line, Thanks to his suit Mark 85. His armour kept him in control while he had all the stones, but then he snapped which was too much; he died.
28. Avengers: Endgame was actually titled Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet
Endgame was shot under the working title Mary Lou 2. Before the title was out for fourth part of Avengers franchise, the movie was named many things. Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 was also in the list. In 2017, Gomora actress Zoe Saldana slipped her tongue and revealed the title Russos came up with, Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet. Later the name was changed to Avengers: Endgame and the word Endgame was referenced a couple of times already in the MCU by then.
27. Thor tried to kiss Valkyrie in a deleted scene
The moments of goodbye for Valkyrie and Thor had an alternate version. Tessa Thompson’s role Valkyrie jumped many ladders, she was a drunk scrapper and now the new Queen of Asgard. A few moments before Thor joined the Guardians of the Galaxy, he tried to kiss her at the time of goodbye. This was mentioned by Joe Russo regarding the original version that did not make the final cut:
[Thor] had this beat where Valkyrie… she puts her arm on his shoulder. And [Thor] sort of starts to lean in for a kiss, and she goes, ‘What are you doing?
And he goes, ‘Oh, I thought that the touch-‘, and she’s like, ‘It’s a goodbye tap I’m giving you’. It was a really funny beat, but we cut it.
26. Scarlet Witch was amongst the most powerful superheroes on the battlefield
The trio: Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man, together were unable to defeat Thanos. Wanda almost had him, that left no choice but to sacrifice his own fleet, Wanda saw Vision dying a few minutes ago, made her angry and more powerful. McFeely said, “she was the biggest threat to Thanos on the field”, while Joe signified the sacrifice Thanos had to make:
She’s a very powerful character and Thanos has to, in a way, cheat and sacrifice his own armies just to escape her.
25. Infinity War and Endgame produced 900 hours of footage
37 and a half days of footage and we only got around 5 hours of watch time. Jeffrey Ford and Matthew Schmidt edited these two movies and I seriously am concerned about their health status after they finished their work. In order to keep track of the footage and prevent a mess, they edit the movie while the shooting was on. Ford said the team was working straight for a year-long:
It was a constant state of preproduction, production, and post-production all at the same time for almost a year straight.
24. Original Avengers are not seen fighting much in the final battle
First, the trio fought Thanos, Cap wielded Mjölnir and ensured his shield was broken. After all that, dead Avengers come back and we didn’t see the original avengers much. Hulk was not given screen time in the epic battle. The writer of the movie has an answer, this is what McFeely said:
The idea was to lean on the heroes who just got back because it was their only appearance in the movie.
This is why already alive ones were not shown beating the bad guys that much.
23. Writers of Endgame thought about including The Defenders
The final battle of Endgame already had enough heroes, The Defenders would have made little to no impact, however, Markus and McFeely considered featuring the heroes from Netflix shows. Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Jessica Jones got all their shows cancelled, not sure if we’ll see them anymore. The writers remember the time when they have thought of bring these four heroes to the MCU, but didn’t:
We would have to introduce these five characters… We already are assuming people have seen a lot of the movies. Are we really going to assume they have bought a subscription to Netflix and watched those shows enough so that when they see them, they’re going to go ‘yay?’
22. Why Thanos was able to break Captain America’s shield?
Vibranium is the strongest metal on earth. Thanos’ sword is not from earth, hence it was able to break the sword so easily. Going back to the time when Thor’s hammer made from Uru metal that literally had godly powers was unable to break or scratch the shield, even so, the double-edged sword tore the shield apart. Christopher Markus said:
While vibranium is the strongest substance on Earth, whatever Thanos’ straight razor is made out of is stronger.
21. Katherine Langford almost played the grown-up version of Morgan Stark
In Avengers: Infinity War, there’s a conversation between Thanos and childhood version of Gamora after the snap. Similarly, there’s a deleted scene where Tony and grown-up Morgan played by 13 Reason Why actress Katherine Langford, have a convo after Tony’s snap in the same place where Thanos did with his daughter. Joe Russo said they had to delete the scene because it confused a few from the test audience:
There was an idea that we had that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way station that Thanos goes in when he snapped his fingers. And that there was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station.
20. A version of the script incorporated Thanos decapitating Captain America’s head
Endgame begins with Thor going for the head, Nebula projects all of it to 2014’s Thanos. Christopher Markus said a version of the script was considered where Thanos travels back to 2012, decapitates Captian America, opens up a portal in 2023 and tosses Cap’s head on the floor in front of the Avengers. This idea is sensible and horrific at the same time. Markus said:
He walked up to [the Avengers] and tossed 2012 Captain America’s head on the floor. For a movie that began with essentially Thanos’ head on the floor, it was a shocking reversal, but perhaps a bridge too far.
19. Only Robert Downey Jr. read the whole script from the entire cast
Not surprising at all. Most actors have been very prone to spoiling everything in interviews and promotional events. Infinity War and Endgame were both filmed simultaneously to puzzle cast members and allowed them to their amusement of not knowing what seriously is happening. The funeral scene of Tony was mentioned as a marriage to all the actors while filming. All heroes received the screenplay for their respective scenes before shooting and Tom Holland only got his lines. Robert Downey Jr., the big man was lucky enough to read the complete script, he knew his character would die.
18. Contemplation went through on Nebula wearing the Gauntlet
Nebula did it in the comics, she got to wear the Infinity Gauntlet. Script held on to her wearing it, soon Tony overpowered her and things are the way they are right now. Karen Gill’s Nebula is a major character in Endgame, she stood as the cornerstone for Thanos to travel into the future.
17. Robert Downey Jr. made $75 million from Avengers: Endgame alone
No kidding, my dear! Iron Man is a rich superhero, his alter ego, Tony runs Stark Industries. Downey seems like he got under the skin of his role. He began with $500,000 paycheck for Iron Man(2008). Slowly with increasing fame and popularity, the actor demanded more money that suited his will. Have a look at the earings from every Marvel movie Robert Downey Jr. acted in:
- Iron Man: $2 million
- Iron Man 2: $10 million
- The Avengers: $50 million
- Iron Man 3: $50 million
- Avengers: Age of Ultron: $50 million to $80 million
- Captain America: Civil War: $64 million
- Spider-Man: Homecoming: $10 million to $15 million
- Avengers: Infinity War: $75 million
- Avengers: Endgame: $75 million
Ask me why he is one of the best actors from Hollywood and I will tell you why he is one of the best and highest-earning actors in the world. He is more than an actor, Downey is a businessman making back-end deals that will allow money from the movie’s profit directly go into his pockets.
16. After snapping to bring back dead life, Bruce might have met Black Widow
After snapping, Thanos met Gamora. Something similar to that, there was an idea of Bruce meeting Natasha in the metaphysical way station. This was never shot. As mentioned before, a scene of Tony and Morgan in metaphysical way station was ready, but that did not end up in the final edit.
15. Thor and Tony were supposed to go to Asgard
There were two stones on Asgard, that gave plenty of options for the writers. Tony would have not met his father and Rocket would have never slapped the God of Thunder if Iron Man joined Thor to Asgard. less emotion probably. McFeely thought the same about it:
We had a sequence where Tony and Thor went to Asgard because technically there were two stones there. Tony, in an invisible stealth suit, fought Heimdall.

14. Natalie Portman did not act for Endgame
Jane Foster, Thor’s love interest was seen in Thor and Thor: The Dark World. Endgame obviously instituted time travel and took to a time where Jane was in Asgard. Thor: The Dark World had some extra footage that wasn’t included in the movie. Instead of calling the actress back, the moviemakers grabbed footage from Thor 2 and put it in Endgame. The only thing Natalie Portman contributed to the movie was her voice in the background when Rocket and Thor land after time travel.
13. Peter Quill’s entry scene was reshot entirely
Unlike Jane Foster’s cameo, Quill’s scene was reshot and the set was reconstructed. All choreography and dance moves were done again for Endgame. Why did they do this and not use footage from Guardians of the Galaxy? No clue.

12. Nebula had no clue about the Soul Stone’s sacrifice
For all those who think it as a plot hole or a mistake, the writers and directors confirm she had no idea about what needs to be done on Vormir to get a hand on the stone. Thanos never brought it up with Nebula and she has no idea how Gamora died. Nebula could have said nothing about the process to Hawkeye and Black Widow meaning Natasha’s destiny is sealed and can’t be changed.
11. Black Widow cannot come back to life
Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is getting a standalone movie after almost 10 years of delay. That doesn’t mean she is coming back from dead. The events of Black Widow movie happen in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Sacrifice for the Soul Stone is irreversible. Russo reminded what Red Skull said on Vormir:
Red Skull very clearly says, ‘It is an everlasting exchange.’ Everlasting would imply that it can’t be undone.
10. In a deleted scene, Rocket Raccoon is seen watching the New York battle
Avengers spent a huge amount of time, fighting the Chitauri army in The Avengers. There’s a deleted scene where Rocket is confused watching the battle. In the scene, Rocket got lines that defame the Avengers’ struggle.
The Chitauri are the suckiest army in the galaxy. Why didn’t you just blow up the mother ship?
Not able to digest his mockery, Tony shaves off his head, a part of his head.
9. Avengers: Endgame featured Marvel’s first-ever gay character
One of the two directors of Endgame, Joe Russo played a cameo role in the movie, I think this shouldn’t be mentioned as a separate fact. The dazzling thing about it is the role Joe played is a gay character. At the beginning of the movie, a survivors’ group included Steve Rogers and others who were still alive after Thanos’ snap. This is where Joe Russo played Gozie Agbo, he grieved over his dead male partner.
8. Vormir scene would have been different
Hawkeye and Black Widow fighting each other on Vormir happened quickly and in a simpler manner. Another version of the scene was shot in which Thanos himself arrives with an army to stop them and Black Widow jumps off the cliff anyway.
7. Quantum physicists were involved in the writing process
Endgame isn’t any made-up time travel movie with silly Quantum Realm theories. Everything that Professor Hulk said about time travel and time mechanics was from physicists who helped coming up with the plot. Christopher Markus said they called quantum physicists to help them pen down dialogues for Banner:
[Banner’s] explanation is essentially what we were told by genuine quantum physicists brought into the writers’ room to explain time travel to us.
6. The end battle scene featured Howard the Duck
Not the first time, Howard the Duck appeared in Marvel Cinematic Universe movies before. Howard was seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 2. Did you not notice him, you have to look closely, this is a Marvel movie we are talking about, Easter eggs are part of the package. When portals opened from around the universe using Doctor Strange’s sorcery, Howard the Duck is seen behind Evangeline Lilly’s The Wasp for a short period of time, blink your eyes and you’ll miss him.
5. Convo between Hulk and Bruce was written
We never saw Hulk in the movie, except in the New York battle scene. Professor Hulk is green and big, like Hulk, but he is not true Hulk. After the end battle in Infinity War, Bruce and Hulk sort things out and agree to come at peace, that was when Professor Hulk should have come to light first. Didn’t happen that way.
4. Brie Larson played Carol Danvers in Endgame first even before she did in Captain Marvel
A jumble in shooting schedule can cause serious issues. Captain Marvel is different in her standalone movie and Endgame. Brie Larson first did her job in Endgame, the reason why she was given less screen time in the movie was to avoid character continuity errors. Captain Marvel’s production began late as Marvel did not know who will be playing the role of Captain Marvel. Directors of first MCU female standalone movie, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck were present on the sets of Endgame to help Russo brothers in shaping the character.
3. Time travel was thought to be a ridiculous idea at first
Scripts for Infinity War and Endgame were written with no time gap in between. After Thanos snapped, bringing back half of the dead life was mandatory. They assumed “time travel” to be a stupid idea. Until then, Ant-Man’s story was never dug deep. Taking all the possibilities into account, time machine using quantum physics looked like a viable option after a while. Markus revealed:
The ‘Ant-Man’ franchise, which we hadn’t dealt with yet, had legitimately if you believe the science, the seeds of a time machine in it, which was a breakthrough.
2. This is how Captian Marvel was able to find Tony and Nebula
The ship Tony and Nebula were on, belongs to Guardians of the Galaxy, one of their member(Rocket Raccoon) is on earth with the Avengers who had a tracking beacon. When Carol got Nick Fury’s page, she came to the Avengers headquarters and found out about Thanos and his snap. She was the only one who could travel across the universe and took help from Rocket in finding the spaceship that set off from Titan.
1. Avengers: Endgame has Stan Lee’s last Cameo ever
Sad that Spider-Man: Far From Home didn’t have Stan Lee’s cameo, so all movies in Infinity Saga don’t have the Excelsior’s cameo. He shot his cameo role for Endgame in November 2017. Stan Lee dressed as his younger 1970’s self for the movie.
