Before I begin anything about Birds of Prey, I just want to appreciate Warner Bros. for their efforts in developing the DC Cinematic Universe. Disney owns Marvel Cinematic Universe and we all know MCU movies are lovely and cheerful. But the moment I heard Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is R-Rated, I understood how Warner Bros. is turning stones with DCEU. Not all superhero movies are meant to be for children. A few characters have darker stories and upsetting plots, I am happy that the DCEU is trying to keep their movies dark and violent as it’s supposed to be.
In the beginning, DCEU tried to imitate MCU with movies like Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice, where a male superhero tries to save the world from a supervillain. But things changed with Wonder Woman and Shazam! had its won style of engaging the audience. Joker is my favourite part of DCEU, one of the world’s most famous villain, getting a standalone movie is the best thing yet. Warner Bros. shouldn’t try to make movies like how Disney is doing with Marvel Studios.
Suicide Squad is a movie with mixed reviews and messed elements. The movie grossed well at the box office though, $746 million comparing to its budget $175 million. The movie had Joker played by Jared Leto and Deadshot played by Will Smith. Suicide Squad had many reasons to be criticised, but the best part of that movie was Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie played the role and she freaking slew it. That’s when the idea of Harley Quinn getting a standalone movie made sense. Birds of Prey was approved and the following are a few reasons to watch Birds of Prey without fail.
Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn
I know I am emphasising a lot about her but she deserves it. Margot Robbie is rock solid while playing Joker’s girlfriend, or should I say, ex-girlfriend. Margot was the best part of Suicide Squad and she will be the same for Birds of Prey. Harley Quinn’s unhinged mind and unique characterisation, demands a high set of acting skills. I am sure Margot has it all.
Ewan McGregor as Black Mask
Ewan McGregor’s role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars prequel trilogy (1999-2005) is still the best roles he played. But in his career, there hasn’t been any epic turn out apart from Obi-Wan. His recent movie, Doctor Sleep did not do as expected at the box office. Black Mask is the antagonist of the movie and if Ewan manages to pull this off, DCEU will have one of the best villains ever. My fingers are crossed for this, but I am excited.
John Wick Level Action
Chad Stahelski is the director and stunt coordinator of the John Wick movies. He took care of the second-unit direction of Birds of Prey. We all know the high action sequences that are involved in John Wick movies. When the director of such movies oversees the action of Birds of Prey, we all clearly know Harley Quinn and her team is going to kick some asses. Most of the action involves martial arts and not CGI superpower fights.
Suicide Squad introduced us to a variety of characters, mainly the villains. Birds of Prey is trying to do something similar, but here, it’s all women(mostly). Here are the characters and the actress who are playing the characters:
- Helena Bertinelli a.k.a. Huntress – Mary Elizabeth Winstead
- Renee Montoya – Rosie Perez
- Dinah Lance a.k.a. Black Canary – Jurnee Smollett-Bell
- Cassandra Cain – Ella Jay Basco
- Victor Zsasz – Chris Messina
This star cast has already made me lose my exhilaration. All of these characters became famous through comics and TV shows, seeing them on the silver screen will be overwhelming.
Gotham City is always known as a cruel and dark place to live. It’s fictional but seems real. Birds of Prey showed us an edgy side of Gotham City in its trailer. A few musicals that express Harley Quinn, weird sets that represent Black Masks taste and costumes that glorify personalities of characters, are a few things promised in the trailer.
A Movie for Women
In 2020, we’ll see Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey which target women and their empowerment. Most of the lead cast of Birds of Prey is female. The director of the movie too is a woman. Cathy Yan, she is very famous for her dark humour scripts and feminism.
As I said, DCEU is on its own journey of making differently styled comic book movies. There are updates about a lot of cuss words used in the movie. That itself explains the movie ending up to be R-Rated. Pretty sure, there won’t be sex scenes in the movie. But Yeah, a lot of violence and killing is to be expected. DC universe is dark and it has to be that way.
