Previously set to release on March 29, but then got delayed, Disney+ is coming alive in India through Hotstar. Instead of having its own separate app and website to stream all the Disney+ content, The Walt Disney Company has planned to enter the streaming service market in India via its already existing subsidiary. Hotstar’s owner is Star India, whose parent organisation is The Walt Disney Company India. Considering the success of Hotstar in India, I got to admit, this is a clear move.
Hotstar is known for having a huge subscriber base who mostly watch sports on the platform. Compared to Netflix and Prime Video, Hotstar still has a bit less number of subscribers, but not anymore. With the launch of Disney+ Hotstar, the platform might attract a lot of viewers because, from April 3, 2020, Hotstar will stream movies and TV shows of Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, Pixar and Disney too. As time goes by, all the Disney content from Netflix and Prime Video will be pulled leaving no choice for fans but to take a subscription for Disney+ Hotstar.
Pricing for Disney+ Hotstar
As far as the earlier pricing goes, Hotstar had two plans:
Hotstar Premium Old Pricing
- ₹999 per year
- ₹299 per month
Hotstar VIP Old Pricing
- ₹365 per year
But now that Disney+ Hotstar is launching on April 3 which will stream new content, the prices are going up:
Hotstar Premium New Pricing
- ₹1499 per year
Hotstar VIP New Pricing
- ₹399 per year
Is it “a lot”? Netflix charges ₹5988 per year with its basic plan, which defines “a lot”. The new Netflix mobile plan costs ₹2388 per year, which only allows you to use Netflix on mobile. I believe Disney+ Hostar’s plan to be at a reasonable price though it is higher than Prime Video(₹999/year).
What all you should know about the Disney+ Hostar launch?
In view of the Coronavirus Pandemic, the launch date is pushed from March 29 to April 3. Generally, launches like these will have a red carpet event, However, the government of India has forced a lockdown from March 24 to April 14, which prevents from conducting any public gathering event in the country.
Hence the launch will kick off with a virtual red carpet event on April 2 premiering The Lion King at 6 pm and Star War’s The Mandalorian at 8 pm. While doing so, you can interact with other users on Disney+ Hotstar, share photos and badges. In a statement by Uday Shankar, who is the chairman of Disney and Star India, it is promised that the newly updated streaming service will create an impact on Indian lives with a lot of storytelling on small screens:
