Black Widow is a standalone movie that we all have been waiting for. When Natasha Romanoff was introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans were sure, she is going to be the first female superhero to get a standalone movie in the MCU. But sadly, Captain Marvel took it away. But things got into track and finally, Black Widow will be getting a movie that will be digging into her past and how she became an international spy and assassin. The movie was into the process for over 15 years and finally, the time has come for the world to witness the Russian World-Class Spy wipe out some of the red in her ledger.
Here are a few things you need to know about Black Widow which is going to be the first movie of MCU Phase 4:
It’s a Prequel
Natasha being dead in Avengers: Endgame for the Soul Stone is one of the most sorrowful things in the MCU. Yet, the moviemakers decided to try something out and are giving Black Widow the movie she deserves. The events of Black Widow will take place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Right when the Avengers split up and are on their own, the movie will begin its story exploring Natasha’s past and how she defeats her new foe.
Explores Natasha’s past
Her past was glimpsed in Avengers: Age of Ultron when Wanda puts on a specific spell on all the Avengers. It was then shown about her training to become an assassin. The movie shows what all she had to sacrifice and what all she had lost in the process of becoming a spy and her relationship with Alexei Shostakov and Yelena Belova.
Black Widow might be fighting a female supervillain in the movie. The SDCC Marvel Studios panel teased a few action sequences of the movie, then at the end of the clip, Black Widow is shown facing off a hooded figure in a metal get-up. This figure is said to be the villain named Taskmaster, who is very well trained in combat. There is no news yet on who is playing the role. This might be the ultimate twist in the movie, where an already announced or known character might turn out to be the Taskmaster.
David Harbour as Red Guardian
Popularly known for his role in Stranger Things as Chief Hopper and Hellboy(2019), David Harbour will be playing the role of Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian. In the comics, Red Guardian is a superhero who was created by the Soviet Union who is equivalent to Captain America. Even though the Soviet Union collapsed, the use of Red Guardian continued. David Harbour told this in an interview with IGN when asked about Red Guardian’s relationship with Natasha,
She(Natasha) is a Russian Operative, they have some history together themselves. But there is this dynamic, where she is gone beyond, like joining the Avengers, the movie shows his(Red Guardian) reactions to that. They have known each other for a while and its a complex history and it gets informed by other movies. This movie happens right after the Civil War.
A lot of talks and rumors have been out and according to me, I think it will happen, there will be a cameo of Tony Stark in the movie. Not sure what purpose the cameo serves, but it’s very much exciting to see more of Rober Downey Jr. back on screen as Tony. He is born for the role and as long as Marvel plans to put RDJ on the screen in prequels or flashbacks, fans will be ready to watch it.
Other Cast Details
We know Scarlett Johansson is playing Natasha Romanoff and David Harbour as The Red Guardian. But other than that, we’ll see Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross (rumored) and many others.
Black Widow is hitting the theatres on May 1, 2020, and in a few countries like India, it’s releasing a day before its actual date, which is April 30, 2020.
When asked about her experience of playing Black Widow, this is what Scarlett Johansson had to say,
I don’t know if I could have played this iteration of Natasha ten years ago. It would have been a very different film. And you know, I get to play Natasha as a fully realized woman and in all of her many facets. I’m excited for fans to see the flogged side of her, what she perceives to be the flogged side of her. And I’m looking to wipe out some of the red in my ledger.
