I am devastated after hearing this news. Mindhunter is my top favourite show and I was introduced to Netflix through Mindhunter. The show ran for 2 seasons exploring about murders and how FBI come up the term ‘Serial killer’.
The executive producer of Mindhunter, David Fincher, who also directed a couple of episodes confirmed the series is not coming back for season 3. The filmmaker explained the reason as well. The budget for the show is very high when compared to its viewership.
In an interview with Vulture, David Fincher spoke in detail about Mindhunter. He revealed the process to be very hectic and tiresome. Fincher worked for six to seven months a year for the show in Pittsburgh.
Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show. We talked about ‘Finish ‘Mank’ and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.
Mindhunter premiered in October 2017 and got viewers hooked to the show with its jittery and dark storytelling. The show follows the work of an FBI agent, Holden Ford, who forms a special team in the 1970s and interviews serial killers to understand them. By doing so, he and the team called Behavioural Science Unit, try to anticipate the next moves of an uncaught serial killer.
All the serial killers on the show are based on real-life murderers played by different actors making the show more vicious. Even the murders that happen on the show are taken from real-life. Fincher shared his two seasons’ experiences:
We had done the first season of ‘Mindhunter’ without a showrunner, with me pinch-hitting on a week-by-week basis. We started getting scripts for the second season, and I ended up looking at what was written and deciding I didn’t like any of it. So we tossed it and started over.
The show was created by Joe Penhall but it had showrunner issues. The second season had a co-showrunner and she worked as an assistant director to David Fincher before.
I brought in Courtenay Miles, an AD I’d worked with who wanted to write, and she ended up co-show running ‘Mindhunter.’ But it’s a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.
When asked about any chances of Mindhunter returning for season 3, a Netflix spokesperson answered:
Maybe in five years.
Earlier this year, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv were released from their Mindhunter contracts because of the unclear future of the show.
The news is making me sad. I was looking up to season 3 for a long time. Mindhunter is one of a kind series. Despite being a crime and investigation story, it hardly featured any action or violent scenes. The series even made it to our topmost underrated Netflix shows of all time.
David Fincher is a well-known filmmaker for his compelling way of directing movies. He directed Fight Club, Seven, Gone Girl, Zodiac, and The Social Network. His upcoming movie Mank is coming to Netflix on December 4, 2020.
