Captain Marvel is coming on 8 March 2019. But wait, did you know that Captain Marvel is actually a superhero from DC comics. Yes! Shazam was actually the original Captain Marvel. Here’s the backstory you need to know.
How Shazam was actually the original Captain Marvel?
It was first Fawcett Comics who published comics related to Captain Marvel. Later on, Fawcett had to cease publishing related to Captain Marvel in 1953, partly because of the copyright infringement suit from DC Comics, alleging that Captain Marvel was a copy of Superman. By 1991, DC had acquired all rights to the character. DC started to integrate all characters from Marvel family (not Marvel Comics) and also captain Marvel into DC universe.
The story became much more interesting when Marvel Comics entered the game claiming the conflict of trademark word – ‘Marvel‘ in Captain Marvel. Marvel Comics already had a character named by Captain Marvel. DC was put into a situation that demanded an unpredictable decision to be taken.
Marvel Comics didn’t stop there, they even licensed everything that had ‘Marvel’ in the titles – crazy enough for DC to change their character’s name from Captain Marvel to SHAZAM. That is why Shazam was actually the original Captain Marvel!
If you think Shazam is just a random word, let me correct you. SHAZAM is the short form or acronym of six “immortal elders” who happen to be Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. This character is created by Bill Parker, C. C. Beck. Shazam first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (cover date Feb. 1940, release date Dec. 1939).
According to the latest updates, DC’s Shazam is said to release on 5 April 2019, directed by David Sandberg, who is a good horror filmmaker. If you haven’t watched the trailer of SHAZAM!, you must.
Coming to the story part, Billy Batson, a boy, when says the magic word SHAZAM can transform himself into a costumed adult with the powers of superhuman. If you are interested in his powers, here they are:
