When money matters, companies negotiate and then leave things for good if they don’t see the numbers. The same happened with Disney and Sony regarding Spider-Man, where the web-slinger superhero was no more part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A lot of fans were upset and the story of MCU’s Spider-Man almost came to an end. But some magic took place and brought back Spider-Man to MCU for one last movie. The magic turns out to be Tom Holland who was drunk in a pub with his family.
Tom Holland was on Jimmy Kimmel Live and discussed the miracle that changed the fate of Spider-Man. The actor said he wouldn’t say it was entirely his doing before jokingly adding he saved Spider-man.
Tom Holland said he was devasted when the news broke out about the removal of Spider-Man from the MCU.
We were at D-23, which is a big Disney convention and the news had come out. I was obviously devasted, I was really upset.
Holland asked if he could get the email of Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger and he emailed thanking for him for his last 5 years that changed his life. Bob surprisingly responded quickly saying,
I would love to jump on the phone with you at some point. When are you free?’
After a few days, when the actor was in a pub, three pints down and drunk with his family in a pub quiz, he got a call from an unknown number who turned out to be Bob Iger. It was that moment that turned the fate of Spider-Man and changed the mind of Disney to come back to the negotiation table with Sony. That’s how Spider-Man came back to MCU.
Tom Holland said he even wiped a bit and begged Bob about it. Jimmy Kimmel laughed and said,
I’m glad you got drunk and got on the phone with Bob!
