In San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Kevin Feige has announced about Marvel phase 4 and all the movies it includes. For a change, he also mentioned about TV series that are in the making for the future Marvel phases. This turn seems to be sudden. Marvel Entertianment was into television before, shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Runaways, Cloak and Dagger, Legion and Agent Carter have already marked their land. A few of them are from MCU and others are unknown. Crisis on Infinite Earths was an ultimate plan of the DC universe to bring all the superheroes together from all shows and movies, but that’s not what Marvel is planning to do.
Here are all MCU shows that are releasing on Disney+ you need to check out. Why Marvel Studios making is making TV series anyways, they don’t need to, because they already have good viewers for their films. This question needs answers from the backend, from the business angle. Following are the actual reasons for Marvel Cinematic Universe to make content for the small screens:
Disney is the boss
We know Marvel Studios would never want to make TV series out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All of the 23 movies make a good infinity Saga and the future of Marvel would be perfect if we got to see movies only. But Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios officially announced about introducing Disney+ series for the future of MCU. Don’t you think The Walt Disney Company made him do it? The reason why Marvel is not making R-rated realistic movies is because of Disney, they won’t let them do it. DCEU movies have the freedom to make their movies realistic and dark(example: Joker), superhero movies are not always meant to be cheerful and lovely. All I’m trying to say is the influence of Disney is more than required.
Gain subscribers for Disney+
As I said, The Walt Disney Company is dominating Marvel Studios because they have every right to do it. Disney is the parent company of Marvel Entertainment. Just like Netflix and Hulu, Disney came up with its own streaming platform called Disney+ which will stream movies, TV shows and documentaries from Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and National Geographic. In order to compete Netflix and outrun their subscriber rate, Disney+ has already laid out their plan. For the Star Wars fans, they have made The Mandalorian, it is the most-watched show on Disney+, helped in growing the subscribers by millions. Knowing MCU has more millions of fans, introducing Disney+ series like The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, Wandavision and a lot more, it becomes compulsory for fans to watch these shows in order to stay aligned with the story and the universe. I must say, this to be a brilliant business strategy.
Dominate all the areas
Marvel Studios have proven their competency in making movies that have grossed millions of dollars at the box office, a few have made billions too. But coming to TV shows, Marvel is nowhere near to what DC is doing. Shows like The Flash, Arrow, Superwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, Titans, Watchmen, OMG! the list is too long. These shows are successful though they are not completely owned by DC Comics. To dominate the entertainment industry one must have to prevail in all the areas which include movies, TV shows, animation, books, magazines, comics, news, music and radio.
To cover up for their failures
Marvel Television unit has made deals with Netflix and produced shows that are still available on Netflix. A different universe consisting of Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Jessica Jones who fight an enemy called The Hand. Like Avengers, all of these characters come together in a Netflix show, The Defenders. Are these shows good? Yes and No. Marvel saw a decline in their viewers as these shows did not satisfy the audiences. Daredevil and Jessica Jones are really good shows and are fan favourites, but the rest are not as good and all of them co-exist in the same universe making it complicated for one to continue and another one to stop. Disney had already planned for Disney+ by then, meaning all the movies and TV shows it owns will be pulled from Netflix soon. Instead of working on something that benefits an external body(Netflix), Disney intends to welfare itself.
Disney’s plan is clearly seen, it is trying to become a monopoly, which I can guarantee will happen with the current plan it is working on. Marvel Studios has become a puppet, the lucky factor here is that all the MCU movie till date have been a success. What if the shows don’t make it, what if they fail miserably and take the franchise down, Disney then takes the blame. I hope nothing of such sort will happen. Many new characters are being introduced to expand MCU and I think the universe gets more interesting with every movie that is about to release.
