Winter has come and gone. Game of Thrones ended with 8 seasons and Netflix is trying to create a show meeting the level of George R. R. Martin’s GoT. The Witcher is a novel series written by Andrzej Sapkowski who is a Polish writer. Before you begin to binge on the series, here’s everything you need to know about it.
Henry Cavill who played Superman in Man of Steel, Dawn of Justice and Justice League will be playing the lead role in The Witcher. Geralt of Rivia is the character played by Cavill. The other cast members are Freya Allan as Ciri, Joey Batey as Jaskier, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, and Tom Canton as Filavandrel.
Geralt is a Witcher who hunts monsters and possess powers to do so. In a world where humans are more wicked than beasts, Geralt has to find his place.
As said by the show creator, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, The Witcher won’t have any big ultimate villain and the story is about the relationship between Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer.
If you take all the other fantasy elements away, you take the magic and story and violence and sex away, you still have three characters who are this broken disjointed family who really need each other even though they don’t want to admit it.
So there’s going be an emotional journey through the story. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko of visual effects studio Platige Image said,
There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and hero inside of all our hearts.
The trailer features many references from the book, The Witcher is an action-packed dramatic thriller with monsters and humans at bay. Watch the trailer and witness Henry Cavill’s phenomenal acting as Geralt.
The Witcher is renewed for Season 2
The first season is not out yet, but the renewal is done. The novel series has six books and two short stories, to adapt it, the showrunners have already mapped out seven seasons. There are high chances that The Witcher might become as big as Game of Thrones or even bigger.

All the episodes have descriptions and when they are formed together, it becomes a poem, which is as follows:
A monster slain, a butcher named
We look at a sorceress’s earlier days
A picky eater, a family shamed
The Law of Surprise is how one repays
A fateful meeting, a bard is maimed
The hunt for a dragon is underway
A return to before a kingdom is flamed
The Witcher Family as you all like to say
It’s going to be a Horror Series
Not surprised by the decision of making it a horrific show. With many monsters, elves and magic, visual effects supervisor Julian Parry told SFX magazine,
I definitely think it leans more towards horror. We’re definitely taking the fantasy out. I can honestly say we’re not fantastical. I mean, it’s fantastical but in a grounded horror sense,” Parry said. “For example, with Striga [a woman cursed to live as a monster], that’s one gnarly-looking thing. That’s very unpleasant!
The Witcher season one is coming out on December 20, 2019. You can watch the show on Netflix.
